If Prayer Feels Like Something You're Doing Wrong, Read This

A lot of women have a complicated relationship with prayer. Not because they don't believe in it — but because it never quite looks the way they think it should. You sit down, you close your eyes, and then... your mind wanders to the grocery list. Or you feel like you're saying the same things over and over. Or the silence just feels empty.

If that's where you are, here's what you need to hear first: you're not doing it wrong. Prayer isn't a performance. It's a conversation — and like any conversation, it gets easier with practice and a little structure.

This guide is for the woman who wants to pray more intentionally but doesn't know where to start. We'll walk through what a prayer journal actually is, why it helps, and how to use one — even if you've never journaled a day in your life. And at the end, you'll find a free 4-page Prayer Journal Starter Kit to help you begin today.

What a Prayer Journal Actually Is (And Isn't)

A prayer journal isn't a diary. You don't need to write beautifully, or at length, or every single day. It's simply a place to bring your honest thoughts to God in written form — and to keep a record of what you've asked for and how He's answered.

Jesus himself spoke about the value of intentional, private prayer. In Matthew 6:6 he said, "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen." The point wasn't the location — it was the intentionality. A prayer journal creates that intentional space, even in the middle of a busy day.

Writing things down does something that mental prayer sometimes can't: it slows you down. It keeps your mind from wandering. And it creates a record — something you can return to weeks later and see, clearly, how God has moved.

Why Structure Helps (Even If You Think It Will Make Prayer Feel Rigid)

Structure isn't the opposite of authentic prayer. For most people, it's what makes authentic prayer possible in the first place. Without any framework, it's easy to either ramble or go blank — neither of which feels like the grounded, connected time you were hoping for.

One of the most helpful frameworks is the ACTS method — not a formula, just a sequence that covers the full range of prayer naturally:

  • Adoration — Start by focusing on who God is, not what you need. This reorients your heart before anything else.
  • Confession — Bring what's been weighing on you honestly. Not to earn forgiveness, but because honesty with God is the foundation of a real relationship.
  • Thanksgiving — Something specific you're grateful for today. Even on hard days, there's usually something.
  • Supplication — This is where you bring your requests. For yourself, for the people you love, for situations beyond your control.

Philippians 4:6-7 captures this rhythm beautifully: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Notice the order — thanksgiving comes before supplication. It changes the posture of the whole prayer.

What to Do With the Things You're Afraid to Say

One of the most freeing things about a prayer journal is that it gives you permission to be completely honest. You can write the prayers that feel too raw to speak out loud. The ones that start with I'm angry or I don't understand or I don't even know what to ask for anymore.

1 Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." That word cast is active — it means throw it, release it with intention. Your prayer journal can be the place where you do exactly that. Write the fear. Write the confusion. Then hand it over.

David did this constantly in the Psalms. He didn't clean up his prayers before bringing them to God. And Psalm 34:4 records the result: "I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears." He kept coming back — and God kept meeting him there.

How to Actually Use It (Starting Today, Not Someday)

Print the Daily Prayer Page. Just one. Sit down with it for ten minutes — morning, evening, or whenever you have a quiet moment. Fill in whatever feels natural first. If Adoration feels hard today, start with Thanksgiving. If you have a lot to say in Supplication, say it. There's no wrong order.

Keep the Prayer Request Tracker somewhere you can find it easily. Add to it whenever something comes to mind. Come back to it in a month and look at what's changed. Some prayers will have been answered in ways you didn't expect. Some will still be open. Both are part of the record.

Use the Scripture to Pray page on the hard days — the anxious mornings, the sleepless nights, the moments when you don't have words of your own. These verses are already prayers. You just have to read them slowly.
