Your chest feels tight. Your thoughts won't stop spinning. You know you're supposed to pray, but you can't find the words — and honestly, you're not even sure where to start.
That's okay. Prayer doesn't have to be long or perfectly worded to reach God.
Sometimes the most honest prayers are the shortest ones. The ones you whisper in the car before work, or repeat quietly when your mind starts racing at 2 a.m. These aren't about getting it right — they're about turning toward God when everything inside you feels tangled.
Here are five short prayers you can lean on when anxiety shows up and your mind won't settle.
1. "God, I Can't Carry This" — When the Weight Feels Too Heavy
This prayer is for the moments when you're overwhelmed before the day even starts. When the to-do list is too long, the decisions feel too big, and you're already exhausted.
You don't have to explain everything to God. You don't have to list out every worry or justify why you're struggling. Just name it: I can't carry this.
Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
He's not asking you to fix yourself first. He's asking you to come as you are — tired, anxious, unsure — and let Him carry what you can't.
2. "Help Me See What's True" — When Your Thoughts Spiral
Anxiety lies. It tells you the worst-case scenario is the most likely one. It convinces you that what you're imagining is what's actually happening.
This prayer interrupts that spiral. It's a request for clarity — not for everything to suddenly make sense, but for God to help you see past the fear.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When you pray "Help me see what's true," you're asking God to guard your mind. To quiet the noise. To help you focus on what's real instead of what anxiety is whispering.
3. "I'm Choosing to Trust You Right Now" — When You Can't See the Next Step
This one isn't about feeling confident. It's about making a choice even when you don't feel like it.
Trust isn't a feeling — it's a decision you make in the middle of uncertainty. And sometimes you have to say it out loud just to remind yourself that you're doing it.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
You don't have to understand the plan. You don't have to see how it's all going to work out. You just have to take one step — and this prayer is that step.
It's you saying: I don't know what happens next, but I'm choosing to believe You do.
4. "Thank You for Being Here" — When You Feel Alone in It
Gratitude might feel impossible when anxiety is loud. But this prayer isn't about forcing positivity — it's about acknowledging presence.
God is with you. Even when it doesn't feel like it. Even when you're sitting in the dark at 3 a.m. wondering if anyone sees you.
Psalm 34:18 says: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
He's not distant. He's not disappointed. He's right there — closer than your next breath.
This prayer shifts your focus from what's missing to who's present. And sometimes that's enough to soften the edges of anxiety just a little.
5. "One Thing at a Time" — When Everything Feels Urgent
Anxiety convinces you that everything needs to be solved right now. That if you don't figure it all out immediately, something terrible will happen.
This prayer is permission to slow down. To do one thing. To take one breath. To focus on this moment instead of the next fifty.
Jesus addressed this directly in Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
He wasn't being dismissive. He was being practical. You can't live tomorrow today — and trying to do that is what's stealing your peace.
When you pray "one thing at a time," you're giving yourself permission to be exactly where you are. To do what's in front of you. To trust that God will meet you in tomorrow when tomorrow comes.

One small step
Pick one of these five prayers and write it on a sticky note. Put it somewhere you'll see it when anxiety starts — your bathroom mirror, your car dashboard, or the corner of your phone case. Let it be the first words you reach for when your mind starts spinning.
These prayers aren't magic formulas. They won't erase anxiety overnight. But they will give you a place to start when everything inside you feels stuck.
You're allowed to keep it simple. You're allowed to pray the same short prayer twenty times in one day if that's what you need. God hears you — not because you got the words right, but because He's already listening.
